Raymond has an extension (70%) and research (30%) appointment at Kansas State University (Manhattan, KS). His research and extension program involves pest management in greenhouses, nurseries, landscapes, turfgrass, conservatories, interiorscapes, Christmas trees, and vegetables and fruits. Raymond is the extension specialist in horticultural entomology for the state of Kansas with a major clientele that includes homeowners, master gardeners, and professional and commercial operators. Raymond has published over 70 scientific refereed publications and over 500 trade journals on topics related to pest management/plant protection. He graduated from MSU BS 1968, MS 1973, Ph. D. 1974, and joined the Horticulture faculty in 1974 to develop a program that stressed pesticide and growth regulators for tree fruit. In 1977 he changed the focus of his research to environmental stress physiology in fruit crops with emphasis on photosynthesis and carbon partitioning. His work has focused on apple, cherry and peach. The areas he has concentrated include; light requirements by trees in relation to orchard design and tree shape, cold hardiness in fruit, water stress, salt stress, and foliage damage thresholds. He has had over 20 graduate students, and 30 visiting scientists in his lab. He is a past President of the American Pomological Society, Vice president of the American Society for Horticultural Science, and Chair of the tree fruit environmental stress working group for the International Society for Horticultural Science. He resides in Williamston Michigan. He has been married to his wife Elaine for 48 years, and they have 3 girls (Leigh Anne, Kate, and Clare) and two grandchildren. He has worked for NOAA since 1992 with National Weather Service and currently National Center for Environmental Information (NCEI). Doug's region covers the 14 north central U.S. states from Colorado to Michigan. Doug's responsibilities include coordinating and informing on climate service activities among federal, state, tribal, academics and private interests in the region across time scales. Engagement with the above mentioned groups and interpretation of climate information, monitoring, directing research and education and outreach are all essential parts of his activities. During extreme climate events, such as drought and major flooding, Doug coordinates information response, attribution and assessment among core partners. The Plant Pathology program at Lincoln focuses on enhancing the quality and productivity of vegetables and small fruits through delivering educational programs pertinent to monitoring, identification and management of economically important diseases. Zelalem worked with limited resource farmers in Africa and completed his graduate and post-graduate studies in Germany. Before joining Lincoln, Zelalem worked as a postdoc at University of Florida’s Tropical Research and Education Center.
