This year's tree fruit track will focus on apples, particularly new technologies for successfully growing a crop. It includes discussions on new cultivars from the Midwest Apple Improvement Association, weed management, protective netting and ground cover trials, and a look at the newly designed Midwest Fruit Pest Management Guide.

![]() Bill Dodd has served as the President of the Midwest Apple Improvement Association (MAIA) since 2010. MAIA has released 6 new apple varieties, so far, with more in the pipeline. He is also a 4th generation apple grower from Amherst, Ohio (near Lake Erie, west of Cleveland). The family farm is geared toward agritainment. They have done pick-your-own apples, hayrides, pumpkin picking, corn maze and other fall activities for more than 20 years. The farm also hosts 20+ wedding receptions per year.

![]() Stephen Meyers joined the faculty in the Purdue University Department of Horticulture and Landscape Architecture as an Assistant Professor in August 2019. He conducts research in weed biology, weed-crop interactions, herbicide tolerance, and integrated weed management strategies and provides the state’s specialty crop producers with timely, research-based weed management recommendations. Before returning to Purdue he served as an Associate Extension/Research Professor and Sweet potato Extension Specialist with Mississippi State University. He earned a B.S. degree in Horticulture from Purdue University and M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Horticulture at North Carolina State University.

![]() Dr. Lina Rodriguez-Salamanca is an extension plant pathologist and diagnostician with the Iowa State University Plant and Insect Diagnostic Clinic. Lina’s responsibilities in the clinic include plant problem diagnosis of diseases (plant pathogens identification) and abiotic problems, accurately and rapidly with a focus on ornamental, horticultural plants/crops and tree samples submitted to the clinic. As part of ISU Extension and Outreach, through the clinic and extension programs directed to specialty crop producers, Lina focuses her efforts on disease diagnosis and its importance on integrated pest management.
![]() Joe Hannan is a Commercial Horticulture Field Specialist with Iowa State University Extension and Outreach. His goal is to increase the quantity, quality, and safety of fruits grown in the state through workshops, field days, media, and personal relationships. He has worked in the industry for over 15 years conducting research, providing education to fruit and vegetable farmers, and selling into local wholesale markets. His areas of focus include grapes, apples, and produce safety. Currently, he serves as director and co-lead the North Central Region Center for FSMA Training, Extension, and Technical Assistance.

Protective Netting, Particle Film and Reflective Ground Cover Trials for Kansas High Density Apple Production | Recording In 2020 on-farm trials were conducted at two high density apple orchards in NE Kansas to assess the feasibility of protective drape netting for sunburn protection and fruit quality in 'Fuji' & 'Honeycrisp.' Research compares yield, color, firmness, sugars, acidity, and starch content from plots treated with netting, organic spray protectant, reflective ground covers and uncovered control groups. ![]() Zac is a Horticulture Extension Agent with K-State in Johnson County, KS. He’s responsible for providing technical support, applied research and educational programs related to fruit and vegetable production. He holds an MS in Horticulture and has conducted research work in sweetpotato, grafted tomatoes, eggplants, peppers, perennial fruit, high tunnels, industrial hemp, lettuce, spinach and melons. He’s an organizing member for the Growing Growers program, Kansas City Young Farmer Coalition, and the Kansas Specialty Crop Growers Association.
![]() Gabe is a first generation farmer who began working in a peach orchard at age 13. Now he manages South Baldwin Farms with an orchard covering 50 acres and continuing to expand. South Baldwin Farms continues to use new growing techniques to improve yield, quality, and stewardship of the land.
