2014 Soils & irrigation workshop
presentation descriptionsSoil Health: Concepts and Principles for Sustainable Soil Use
Dr. David Hammer, University of Missouri Soil health is defined conceptually in the context of essential soil functions related to plant growth, soil water movement, and environmental quality. * See presentation below Soil Health for Vegetable Farmers Kerry Clark, University of Missouri Bradford Research Center This presentation will discuss how soils and crops interact, the importance of maintaining soil structure and building soil organic matter and management methods to build soil health. * See presentation below Innovative Cover Crops for Vegetable Farmers Steve Groff, Cover Crop Solutions * See presentation below Building Better Soil at LU's Carver Farm Steven Kirk, Lincoln University At LU's Carver Farm we strive to improve our soils using a combination of crop rotation, cover cropping, nutrient management and composting. * See presentation below How Soil Quality Affects Water Quality Bob Broz, University of Missouri Water quality issues can be a direct result of soil issues. We will look at soil types and how they affect water quality concerns by leaching or runoff of nutrients, soil, and pesticides. * See presentation below Successful On-Farm Irrigation Liberty Hunter, Ashland, MO Explore irrigation from the perspective of a vegetable farmer, from the green house to the field. * See presentation below Maintenance of Drip Irrigation Systems Patrick Byers, University of Missouri The presentation will include the following topics: components of a vineyard trickle irrigation system, design considerations, maintenance during the growing season, end-of-season maintenance, and beginning-of-season maintenance. * See presentation below

workshop presentersDr. David Hammer has been a professional soil scientist for 40 years. He has taught courses in soil genesis, soil classification, forest soils, soil geomorphology, urban land use and watershed management. His research has investigated the above topics, as well as surface mine reclamation, urban storm water runoff and ecosystem services. He supervises the University of Missouri Soil Health, Soil Characterization and Geotechnical Analyses Laboratory and currently is on the faculty in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering.
Kerry Clark is a senior research specialist at the University of Missouri Bradford Research Center. Her research examines the effects of agricultural management practices on soil health. She is coordinator of a 16-city educational workshop series on soil health that will travel through Missouri in 2014. Steve Groff and his family, farm 225 acres of cash grain crops, 25 acres of pumpkins, and 2 acres of high tunnel tomatoes in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. Cover Crops are used purposefully and some fields have not had any tillage for over 35 years. Steven Kirk has been the Field Supervisor for the Commercial Vegetable Production Program at Lincoln University Cooperative Extension’s George Washington Carver Farm since September 2009. His specialties include chili pepper, pumpkin, seedless-watermelon, companion cover-cropping and high tunnel tomato production. Bob Broz has a background in agriculture production and education. He has been with the University of Missouri Extension Water Quality program for over 20 years. Liberty Hunter is an organic farmer in Mid-Missouri. She has been farming for the past 5 years and has co-owned a certified organic vegetable farm in Ashland, MO for the past 3 years. The farm has consistently produced over 50 different types of vegetables every year and uses CSA, restaurants, grocery stores, and a farmers market to sell their produce. Patrick Byers is Regional Horticulture Specialist with the Greene County office of University of Missouri Extension. His educational background includes an associate degree from the University of Nebraska, a bachelor’s degree University of Missouri, and a Master’s degree from the University of Arkansas, all in horticulture. His current position includes outreach programming for commercial and home horticulture in the 16-county southwest Missouri region. |
